“I recently had emergency dental care at Woollahra emergency room. I went in after my car’s battery died and I had to go to the nearby hospital. During the consultation, the attending emergency dentist explained to me that he was not a traditional dentist. He explained that he specialized in “dental restoration” and had been trained by the likes of Dr. Kavoussi.
“I was surprised that he was American-trained, because most dentists here are from Australia. The only thing that bothered me was that I had an emergency tooth treatment – it made me a bit uncomfortable. But, anyway, after he’d taken x-rays, he explained everything to me, including the fact that I would need an emergency dental tooth treatment to save my tooth.”
“After explaining all of this to me, I thought that I was being treated like any normal patient in an emergency room. After all, after a car battery dies, you call a dentist, right? But, not only was I not an ordinary patient, I wasn’t even an ordinary case. My jaw was shattered and there was a good chance that I wouldn’t be able to eat or talk properly. That was the extent of my physical pain. But, as far as the emotional pain, I thought that I was going to die.”
Woollahra emergency dentists, along with their staff, treats patients with the same respect and concern that any person would experience if they were in their shoes. They make sure that your dental treatment is of the highest standard possible. The treatment procedures that the staff puts into place, and the materials that they use, allow them to treat patients with the same levels of care and dignity as those who are in their situation.
During your appointment, you will undergo a thorough examination by the emergency dentist. This includes a full examination of your mouth and jaw area to check for any obvious broken or infected teeth. They will also take and evaluate a complete set of x-rays to ensure that there are no missing teeth. A CT scan of your head and neck can also be conducted to ensure that no other problems exist with the nerves or the brain that could result in a catastrophic loss of a tooth or part of the head. If a tooth has been lost, then the area will be restored with synthetic teeth to mimic the appearance of a natural tooth.
Once all the necessary tests have been completed, your treatments will begin. You will be provided with all the dental supplies that are required for your treatment. They include gauze, antibiotic ointment, syringes, tooth brushes, mouthwash, gauze pads and gauze stick. You may also receive a referral to an orthodontist or a cosmetic dentist to assist in the cosmetic portion of your treatment.
Your treatment can be quick or it can take a while depending on the severity of the problem. If there is more than one tooth needing to be replaced, then the process may take longer. Your regular dentist should be able to get back to you within the hour or two. In most cases, they can have you back to your home within 24 hours. However, this will depend on how far out of town you are and how long the road is to the hospital.
When there is an emergency such as this one, you should feel confident that the staff is reliable. Your regular care physician should be able to assist you as well. If not, you can always call the emergency number and talk to someone right away.
